Hi-
I am in the reassembly stage of my steering box rebuild, and I got the new racer in the worm gear thread nut, but there is a small seal that goes into the new racer, that i cannot get in, and damaged this one. Because it's so fragile, anyone have any tips for getting it to set inside the racer, so I don't damage the new one I will have to re-source. I tried using a socket to drive it in, but that didn't work in this case.
That seal is sure beat up. Some of the seals sold today vary in quality. Clean the bore and Seal OD. Put some RTV on the OD and place it in the bore and slightly tap it in. Then use a piece of flat metal and tap it in place in one shot.
No, that seal is junk. Get a new seal and use that. Sorry for any confusion.
oh ok, that's what I was thinking too. Any idea where I can source just this part? I called the original company I bought the rebuild kit from, and they said I have to buy a whole new kit because they don't just sell that part . I just call it the worm gear box small seal, not sure if that is the correct technical word for it? Thanks for the assist.
