With the standard hood, you're pretty much limited to a regular Performer or equivalent dual plane. If you are willing to run a single plane intake, a Team G 7525 or 7530 will fit with a drop base air cleaner. The 7525 is a great intake for smaller port (180-195cc runner heads), but you'll need to find one on Ebay as they stopped making them.

Swap out the RPM air gap for a Team G 7530 air gap intake and your hood clearance issues disappear without losing any performance.

Are you planning to add a spacer under the carb?
There are several drop base air filters on the market.
Measure and do your research.
Moroso, K&N, Holley, Proform, Billet Specialties and many other's manufacture them in different drops.
Going to a shorter filter element will cut down on air flow to the carb and could cause you problems.
Do you need the airgap for your performance needs or will a different manifold work better and supply the hood clearance you need?
You could also modify your existing hood or replace it with a style that will give you the necessary clearance.
I'm building a 496 with an air gap, 1" phenolic spacer, 1" drop base air filter and installing it into my 73.
I'm less worried about hood clearance, because I want more performance and air circulation over and around the engine.
Once my engine is installed, I'll check hood clearance and if needed find an L88 or tall L88 hood to give me the clearance I need.
Good luck!
