Default Handling

This topic is kind of related to the spare tire thread. I was wandering by removing the spare tire how would change the handling of the car since the would change the weight ratio.

Just put in aluminum heads and you'll be fine :jester

Serriously, though, I don't think it makes much of a difference unless you were racing. Its only 50 lb or so out of ~3500: 1-2%. At that level, the amount of gas in the tank, specific options on your car (A/C, PB, PS, BB or SB, ...), and whether you've been on a diet lately are all going to contribute similarly.

Even so, you don't want to take off a bunch of things only at one end of the car. Most things people do to save weight involve the engine compartment, so if you ever go that route, the tire carrier will even things out.

You don't need to worry about it as he said. Since you are interested in handling, you might find 77 Facts on my website very interesting. You need FE-7. Besides Al. heads, Al. intake & VB rear spring are good wt. reduction changes.

Ganey,
I read your site, and I don't believe that 77 and 99 vettes could have the same slaloms on the same course. The course must have changed in 22+ years. A 99 vette should be lighter, have more power, better braking, and better cornering (and Mario Andretti should be a better driver than your average magazine tester). At the very least, tires were garbage in 77 compared to now. Was that figure also out of road and track?

Yes, all R&T. As you know, if one wants to compare handling of C3 to other cars, then one needs a standard for comparison. 77 set a new record in 77 & has the record for Corvette 3rd gen., which was later matched by a Ferrari 512BB. 84 C4 did better, but not all C4 did better, the main improvement being the larger wheels & better tires.
That was w/ FE-7 so a 68-77 can easily be made to handle well. A large part is the driver. Even if they hang w/ you in the corners leave 'em in the straights !
