Default Front caliper question.

Finally got round to getting my front calipers apart. Pistons were very tight in the bores and didnt move back and forth like the rears.
I first thought they might have had "O" rings without springs. Nope, lip seals and springs in them. Bores are good but noticed lots of what look like small steel bits. Any ideas

?

Steel shavings could be from the edges of the dust boots when they were seated, metal on metal.

My only comment is that from the pix, it looks as if the calipers are NOT stainless lined, looks all the same color to the metal.....all I know is that mine were stainless lined when I bought the car, and when finally switching to O ring pistons, also went to DOT 5 fluid, silicone...no rust, and since I have an aluminum master cylinder, better for any metal differences, much less the aluminum pistons.....

I agree they dont look SS but i have put a weak magnet against them. It sticks to all parts of the caliper except in the bores?

Curious. Take the lid off the MC and run a "clean" magnet around the reservoirs. Any metal in there? If you don't know the history of the vehicle, who knows what was accidently introduced through a open MC.

Some MCs have bleeder screws and on occasion people would have to drill them out. Who knows?

What I'm getting at is, the source of the metal could be "upstream".

Thoroughly clean the calipers with denature alcohol. I use rifle brushes or pipe cleaners to clean the passages followed by compressed air. As for the filings in the bores, a PO may have reused brake fluid from the bleeding bottle. Jerry
