Default 1980 l-82 Engine.

Hi guys , I was hoping to get some help with an issue. I am doing some work refreshing my 1980 l-82 engine. In doing this, I decided to change the oil pump. I'm not having any oil pressure problems. But, I thought it was a good idea while the engine was on the stand. (cheap insurance) I purchased a new Melling high volume pump from the local parts store. So heres the issue the directions with the pump havew a warning that reads as follows:
"A new intermediate shaft with a pinned steel sleeve must be used with this oil pump application. DO NOT use a substitute. If the steel sleeve is not used the driveshaft of the oil pump can be damaged, resulting in failure of the pump." What does this mean I'm confused. Please lend some guidance... Should I use this high volume pump in a stock application?

a HV oil pump takes more HP to turn and they do not want you to use a stock plastic collared drive because it could break the plastic collar. :chevy

I would stay away from a high volume pump for a stock and/or street engine. Chevy never used them and I would think that the Chevy engine guys know what they are doing.

It means you need one of these:

The factory shaft has a plastic sleeve which can cause the alignment of the shaft to go askew.

The Chevy guys did know what they were doing, which is why they spec'ed out a higher pressure oil pump for the LT-1 and Z-28 engines. I run a high volume pump in my car and have zero issues with it.

I agree that a high volume pump is not necessary. In fact, when I showed up with all the parts for an engine builder to put together a 468BBC(drag racing only) he handed the Melling high volume pump back to me and told me to buy the standard pump. The motor was assembled with oil restrictors in the back, so it makes sense that pumping more oil to the top of the engine would have probably turned that red bulb(oil pressure) on the tach before I even made it down the 1/4 mile. Longevity says that you don't want more oil than is necessary up top.

Just my 2 cents.

Well what do you guys think? Should I get the intermediate shaft w/ the steel sleeve or get the standard pump? Is the stock L-82 pump a high volume pump? I really appreciate alll of your help. I feel guilty sometimes because I don't have much input to help others. This is my first 'vette. but , i'm a fast learner.

Chevy NEVER used a high volume pump on a production engine. They did use a high pressure pump on SOME solid lifter engines.

Get both - the factory oil pump driveshaft with its plastic collar is the same as buying a nylon toothed timing chain - the driveshaft with the steel collor is like 9-10 bucks - and a oem pressure oil pump is like 15-20 -

Your high volumn pump is not likely to cause any harm - but the point is that it will give no benefit, apart from not having priority oiling for the mains the SBC has quite possibly the most bulletproof oiling system available.
