Well ... a picture is worth a thousand words. Show us what you have going on.
Its not unusual from my experience to have to push in on the trailing arm to get the half shaft u-joint to push into the yoke on the diff.
Keep in mind with the trailing arms hanging down they naturally want to pull the half shaft out of the diff yoke due to suspension geometry. And if you are in the right spot on the u-joint/yoke the TA angle maybe interfering with you getting them in at all. If you have the shocks out the TA's maybe really hanging down.
You need to suspend the trailing arms /TA's up a bit if your alone by putting a block of wood or something in the TA pocket up by the TA bushing to keep it suspended while you attempt to re-attach the half shafts.
Thanks for the info. I’ll post some pics later. Should I be messing with the cam adjustment to pull the TA inwards? Or should I just push the TA’s inward by hand?

When I do half shafts I don't even have the strut rods on the car. I let the wheels hang down to remove the half shafts like when doing a u=joint job. With a jack under the trailing arm. That way you car use the tire to rotate for the u-joint nuts access and going up and down you can adjust the in and out position.
Drain Plug! When ever you have the rear end out, just go ahead and drill and tap for a drain plug. This is the latest 4.11 that I put together. This is Black Epoxy paint. I'm also a firm believer in polishing the inside to the cover. This one is a HD and they are well worth it. The casting is so superior and it used substantially larger spring bolts and plate.
Just polishing, cleaning, and getting ready to paint the HD diff cover
"Drain Plug! When ever you have the rear end out, just go ahead and drill and tap for a drain plug.". So you get to miss all the fun of cleaning up the gear oil that always misses the drain pan!

If you havent rolled your car back and forth about 10 feet each way the suspension hasnt settled yet. That usually helps as well. If you think the car is jacked up in the air its because the tires are trying to push out and settle but the grip is keeping them in close to the differential. Rolling it will lower the rear end
