Default Power steering pump installation help

I spent the afternoon trying to wiggle the power steering pump into its brackets but just can’t do it. My car: 1969 big block with stock brackets.

The problem is the two rear studs on the pump. The lower one won’t go into the lower bracket because the upper stud is hitting the upper bracket and just can’t get the upper stud into the adjusting bracket slot. I’ve loosened the upper bracket and removed one bolt from the lower bracket to swing it down more but no luck. Pulley is off the pump.

Do I need to install the lower bracket (#1354 in first photo) to the pump first and install it all as one unit? I doin’t know if I can get the two bolts holding the lower bracket to the block on if I do it that way.

What am I missing? Thanks.

I've had to replace the lower bracket twice over the years, and as I recall I would remove the top bracket and install the bottom of the pump first.
Then I could install the upper bracket onto the adjustment stud and install the upper bracket bolts.

I have a 68 small block and I have to take off the upper bracket as well. I think I had to loosen the lower bracket to get it in. I would guess you have alot less space with a bbc.

On my BB I had the upper bracket off to get it back on the bottom. It is definitely a wrenching to get it in there.

Thanks everyone. Took off the upper bracket completely and the pump dropped right in!!! The only problem I’m looking at now is the stud on the the exhaust (I have hooker headers not stock manifolds). The stud for the bracket just barely reaches. I assume because the stock manifold was thicker and pushed the stud out further. Might try washers between the stud and the header.
