One project I need to do on my 80 C3 is upgrade the rear suspension. I've been reading about coil over kits. Main issue I was told last time it was driven was the rear wants whip, said could be the leaf spring? Figured if I do anything to the rear suspension might as well upgrade it while I'm back there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just want her driving tight and smooth.
Does the rear whip with you? No sense throwing money at parts until you know whether you have a problem.
I have not had the privelage to drive it. Been in the process of restoring interior and about build a air intake manifold finish up some things. Then she'll be road worthy again. Will know then, plan to do it next winter. Just getting some info on options for rear suspension. So I have a starting point if it does whip on me.
Rebuild the trailing arms with stock rubber bushings or Johnny joints. Replace all old rubber with new. Put adjustable strut rods in. You should be fine. Coil overs will not handle any better.
I second that, trailing arms, struts, shocks and new rubber everywhere. After doing the front suspension and Borgeson steering I was not happy until the rear was done.
My rear strut rod replacement job escalated quickly, but a set of heim-jointed strut rods and a proper 4-wheel should be the first thing you do. Worn strut rod bushings, or even a bit of rear toe-out, will cause a squirrely rear-end.
Not sure what "whip" means as far as suspension but too big a rear sway bar will make it over steer. I would diagnose the problem before replacing parts.
