81 Electrical Issues

I've got a 81 that I bought not running, Ive put most of it back together and it has a new motor, HEI etc. Doing away with the ECM. I have never had this car running just FYI. So I installed a new ignition switch, jumped the neutral safety switch and when I went to crank it over the motor bumped then blew the fusible link at the starter. Is there a certain place I should start looking? Certain color wires or do I need to take the harness apart and look. I have the steering column dropped, gauge cluster out for access.

Have you bench tested the starter?
Can you provide some more detail on the new engine, used engine, crate engine, etc.?

the starter is new as well as the starter harness and the motor will crank if jumped with solenoid wire. Motor is not stock but a bored out 350 hence the HEI.
