Overly rich mixture is black smoke.
White Smoke could be coolant! Lets hope that's not what you're seeing.
And for what its worth, old engine exhaust w/o cats and smog crap just stink. That's just the way it is, especially with any modest cam upgrades, carbs, etc. We get spoiled with modern exhaust systems.

Do yourself a favor and get a boot. If you drop a screwdriver between that oversized washer, or just the nut, and the body of the car, you can burn up a wire, or even burn up the car.
What diagnostic tools do you have at your disposal? Ignition issues are easiest to diagnose, if you have a timing light. Vacuum issues are also easy, if you have a vacuum pump and a pack of vacuum caps (Amazon or your local auto store). It may well be a carb issue, but if it were my car, I'd want to eliminate all of the easy problems first.
