White Smoke could be coolant! Lets hope that's not what you're seeing.
And for what its worth, old engine exhaust w/o cats and smog crap just stink. That's just the way it is, especially with any modest cam upgrades, carbs, etc. We get spoiled with modern exhaust systems.
What diagnostic tools do you have at your disposal? Ignition issues are easiest to diagnose, if you have a timing light. Vacuum issues are also easy, if you have a vacuum pump and a pack of vacuum caps (Amazon or your local auto store). It may well be a carb issue, but if it were my car, I'd want to eliminate all of the easy problems first.
