Default Video: Oil Change for Beginners

Years ago, I made a repair video on changing the blend-doors on a WJ Grand Cherokee. Many people expressed appreciation for the video guidance that made a seemingly-difficult job easier.

Many expert mechanics forget how daunting some tasks are if you've never done them before; they may be easy for the experienced, but others are leery about trying those jobs. I know I appreciate whenever somebody has done a video about a repair I'm about to do, so I can see the steps in detail before doing it myself.

My wife bought me a little generic action cam, so I thought I'd use it to make instructional videos for some of the more basic maintenance and repairs I'm always doing on my cars, my '71 Corvette included.

The first one I recorded last year, and only just now got around to editing, is one of me getting my Corvette out of Winter storage and doing an oil-change:

This is really basic, and designed to get people under their car for the first time by showing exactly what it takes.

If people find it useful, I'll put up more videos in this same vein. I'm always doing something to at least one of the cars that seem to end up in my driveway like stray dogs, though my Corvette is in the best shape, so those videos will likely be just regular maintenance items for now.

Here are some of the jobs I have lined up for the Corvette that might make it to video:
  • Replacing shocks
  • Adjusting Parking Brake shoes
  • Full Coolant Flush
  • Compression Test
  • Quadrajet rebuild

and anything else that might unexpectedly pop up once driving-season returns.

There is also no risk of these videos winning an Oscar for production value or the charisma of the lead actor...

Thanks for posting, I’m sure some people will find these useful...👍🏻 I’d like to see compression test and a brake bleed if you ever do that...

BTW, Are you happy with the oil and additive you used in the video. Who makes the additive?

Thanks for the video but one thing I would offer - Best to do the oil change at the END of the season just before putting it away. The combustion contaminants need to be removed before storage. The fresh oil does not deteriorate sitting inside the crankcase. Any moisture that might accumulate during storage will not have any combustion contaminants to react with and will fully vaporize once the oil is brought up to operating temp. The PCV system will remove any moisture at that time.

I forget which brand I use; I usually just go on Amazon and order a bottle of whatever is reasonably priced. I've never compared them, nor seen test-results for the effectiveness of each.
