How about som help for a C5er..
need to find out some info on this 19789 Corvette..VIN1Z8718S407162.
the car has 91000 miles on the clock and the paint needs some help..has all the options.. would like to learn how to dechiper the VIN and approximate value of the car.
The only thing that the VIN tells you is the original engine option, via the 5th digit. An "L" indicates the base L-48 motor, while a "$" says that it's the higher HP L-82.
For a base motor '78 in good original condition but needing paint, I'd say that a reasonable price is in the $6k to $8k range.
It's a 1978 Corvette, number 7162 in production. Not a Pace Car. Assuming the fifth digit is an "L", the engine is an L48. It would have to be a "4" to have the L82.
That's about all there is you need to know. Watch out for bogus L82's. Many owners stuck L82 badges on the hoods of L48 cars...and more than a few folks have gotten nailed by this bit of chicanery!
Are you sure the VIN isn't 1Z87L8S407162, if thats the case it's a '78 with an L-48 engine 7162 off the assembly line. The engine stampings will give you the type:
CHW 185hp Manual trans
CLM 185hp Auto trans
CLR 175hp at California emmissions
CLS 175hp High altitude Auto Trans
CMR 220hp(L-82) manual trans
CMS 220 hp(L-82) auto trans
CUT 185hp auto trans
I'm not sure why the CLM and CUT engine codes are the same engine specs but thats what the info I have shows. The trim code plate is on the drivers side door hinge pillar, that will show original exterior color and interior color.
Sorry thats all the info I can help you with. The build sheet can be on top of fuel tank or under carpet.
duh ..the motor ID is supposed to be an L... what is the best way to research history on the C3 ???
research on individual C3's is difficult at best - GM didnt keep the build sheets before the move to Bowling green - Carfax wont work on a car made before 80 or 81.
You may be able to doa title search through you local DMV but even that may not tell you much. The VIN has been decoded so you know what its supposed to have - by checking the engine code you will be able to tell what the transmission is and from there - you can visit several sites to see what the likely rear gears are.
Original paint and interior colors can be found on the trim tag located above the top hinge of the drivers door. this will also tell you if it was originally leather equipped or not - very few were not.
The 25th Anniversary Registry has a lot of specs for the 78 on its website at http://www.vettefinders.com/78registry/index.html if you want to get into specifics. such as options - gear ratios etc....
And of course there is no larger repository of C3 information than this forum.
Dude, you've got like 32,000 posts. Don't you already know what a great place this is?! :D Take a look over the car in detail and send us old C3 guys any questions you may have. We're a good helpful bunch over here.
