Hi all, I've got a 1970 454 w/ auto transmission. I've recently had a few issues pop up and was wondering if others have had these before and/or how to possibly address them.
First, I recently was having trouble turning the car off. I could even remove the key and the car was still running. I happened to try the headlights and that managed to get the car off, but was certainly odd.
Second, my left turn signal has stopped working, the dash light is illuminated constantly, the fiber optic indicator shows normal tail light, and if I manually act as the signal by tapping the lever up and down, the f/o indicator brightens as expected, but does not make a normal sound and the dash indicator stays on and doesn't click. The lever will correctly click back after turning, regardless of the indicator working.
When the engine didn't shut off, did it appear to be 'dieseling', or was it running normally where you could give it gas, and it revs up?
The turn signal sounds like either a bad ground or a burned out bulb (possibly in the front, since the fiber optics show the rear bulb illuminated)?
The engine appeared to be running normally. It did not happen after I managed to get it off and then drove and turned it off again.
The signal bulbs for the actual signals (front and back) both are working, but the indicator stays on with the rest of the gauge cluster lights and it won't blink.

Your dash sounds like a bad ground to me too. You may have to pull out your drivers seat and lay on the floor and look up under there. If it isnt obvious you may have to pull the dash....sorry but if its a bad switch you would have to pull it anyway.
Was any work done to the car lately?

Appreciate any thoughts/input.
I recently had this happened (won't shut off) with my '97 Jaguar project. I even disconnected the battery and it was still running. My forum search for that points to a dirty/ sticking ignition lock mechanism. If I pound on the side of the steering column I can make it shut off so I plan on taking the steering wheel off and start from there.
For the turn signal, you probably just have a bad flasher, but it could also be more than one bulb that is not working.. The flasher is a thermal switch so is dependent on the load. If there is no or little load it won't heat up at all so won't cycle.

OK, so it sounds like either a bad ignition switch, or as Richard454 pointed out, the rod could be out of adjustment (or possible something worn out on the key cylinder?). The actual switch is on top of the steering column, right before it goes thru the firewall to the engine compartment. There is a rod that goes from this switch up to the actual key cylinder. If it happens again, you can try reaching up under the dash to fiddle with the rod, to see if that has any effect. For the turn signal indicator, I have never seen the exterior blinkers blink, but the dash light stay on solid, so I can't help much there.

Sorry should have elaborated- the hazard switch under the steering column will cause the turn signal light indicator to remain on if the switch is not fully pulled in/ out. Try pulling it out all the way-see if hazards operate correctly then push it back out all the way and see it that solves the probelm
