The CD player was in my '91 5.0, but it wasn't factory. It's a model PCD-5000 made by Phase-Linear, out of production unfortunately. The reason I used it is because only the lower half of the face removes and it fit nicely in the area where the upper A/C vents are. Again, the main box is mounted in my jack compartment, with a home-made cable running under the console to connect the control panel to the radio/CD unit. The hard part was soldering the wires onto the back of the control panel and making a "connector" from PC board to fit into the radio unit. Any detachable-face CD should work for this - you'll just have a larger control panel that needs to be mounted somewhere.
I made a radio delete plate from a sheet of ABS plastic I got at
www.partsexpress.com
The plate covers the existing radio cutout and **** holes - I'm not sure if I'm going to put back the original radio or not. Look for P/N 265-940, 265-945, or 265-948. The sheets are great for making custom trim panels and enclosures; the ABS can be heated and bent to form curves.
If you use a full-sized removable face CD player, you could mount the face on a trim plate mounted over the existing radio cutout. My delete plate is glued with weatherstrip adhesive.
I thought about installing the full head unit in place of the A/C vent/wiper switch, but I didn't to damage the A/C vents too much - hard to find. If you relocated the wiper switch (under the dash?), you could completely remove the vent/switch assembly, mount the head unit, and trim it with the ABS plastic.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
