You could do that I suppose but why? Eventually the external coil will fail on the old style distributor and those have only been made in china for years now.. Might as well just spend the $20 on a module and run the 12v wire through the grommet by your steering column.. it should only take 15 minutes or so to fix. at least thats what I did. if you have an electric choke you could use the 12v power from that as well I suppose.

What do the radiator fans have to do with the engine going dead? (unless it overheated badly?) A loose ground for the fan shouldnt really blow fuses either. Sounds like there may be other issues. If the HEI module overheated and later cooled and started working that could still be your issue.
