Problems with starter
Yesterday the starter on my '77 was making a very loud clanking or grinding when I was attempting to start it. It had done this before and I took the shims out. After that it was cranking just fine. Until yesterday. I had made sure there was room between the starter and flywheel when I took the shims out - when the shims were in there before the starter was getting bound up against the flywheel.
I should also mention that my battery was dead and wouldn't take a full charge and when it was cranking the starter, it was cranking very slowly. I think I have a bad battery. Could the clanking or grinding be a result of an undercharged battery? Lack of shims or not enough shims? Combination of both? I'm concerned about damaging my fly wheel.
Thanks in advance for the insight.

here is a discussion of the topic https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...lip-trick.html
Concerning the battery, it obviously is not contributing to the proper engagement of the starter.
