Just finished having the new hydraulic flat tappet cam put in the vette, something I've wanted to do for a while I figured I should just get er done.
years ago in my drag racing days I would use Racer Brown cams.Jim Dowell was racer Browns right hand man and has been there forever. I called him up gave him the information he requested and boy he delivered..232 duration @50 intake 232 duration@50 exhaust .501 lift intake.501 lift exhaust 106 degrees center line intake 114 degrees centerline exhaust LSA 110 degrees. The cam came out of the box looking like jewelry the lube he sent was like the stuff Jackson recommend. This thing has a nasty idle but still pulls enough vacum for the brakes and headlights. Now I can make good use of that 9 " 2800 Stahl FTI converter.
if you need a cam set up for your car you may want to check them out .

Glad to hear you liked the cam. Classic SBC cam specs right there. What compression ratio are you running? 10:1?
It does seem like a number of the classic flat tappet cams are being discontinued by the manufacturers. Racer Brown has been around forever. Hope they keep making great cams.
It is amazing how after all these years of cam tech how well the straight pattern stuff works. Sound great too.
Are there many other cams that can eek a few more ounces of power out of a given small block? Yes. But experience on the dyno says that the modern grinds are worth about 15 more Apples to Apples at the expense of tougher break in procedures and longevity.
There is a reason Comp, Isky, Crower and others keep these grinds on the shelf......they just work when you pick the right one.
I have a straight pattern comp 292H in my 406 and it runs very well........it was spend $1000 for roller equipment or use the $1000 on a pair of heads......to me, heads were the better choice. No way would a 406 run as well with a pair of GM heads and any roller cam.
Post a sound vid!

FWIW, don't have a dog in the hunt but "stuff" = CMD # 3 extreme pressure lube

Over the years I have used old school cams from Crane, Comp, Crower, Ultradyne, and Isky (2 in use currently) with zero problems!!

I built a 350 with a Goodwrench short block 20 years ago (I was 29!) with a very early set of Edelbrock RPM heads, RPM intake (a year before the Air Gap existed), and a 292H Magnum Comp cam for my Dads 32' Deuce 3 window. I put a 3000 stall in it with a TH350, and a 3.00 gear.......3" stainless exhaust.....with Stainless Bullet style glasspacks......at 2500 pounds it would flat out get it....the stall wasn't really a stall at that weight and it ran like a dream down the Interstate at 75 MPH.........but the SOUND.......I had people chase me down at the Michigan Nationals in 03' asking me what engine and cam it had in it......it had louvered hood sides so it was hidden.......I use to bet the Local Detroiters a draft from the beer stand if they could correctly guess if it was a big or small block......fun times.
Since then I have installed this cam in about eight other cars.......Now don't get me wrong, I do not use it for everything......the car has to be light or have a big gear if heavy......for my own engine, I decided to try it on a 406 as a couple of roundy round guys have used it in a 400 for Canadian Modifieds and they both said the midrange is very strong BUT have it ground on a 108 LSA, which is what I do now.
I used to build a lot of Street Rod engines and those guys are into sound more than performance but the 292H does both if setup right.
agree the comp 292 needs deep gears
72nova true 11:1 292 magum ported 292 turbos, vic jr 750dp
3000 stall 4.56 gears. Can ran 12.80s on street radials in Ca air
Back then that was the proverbial 390-400hp recipe youd see in Car craft.
I felt the engine was a little soggy though but it really picked up mid/top
think on a 108lsa it would have woke up, Isky has their version of it much better
Also like the single pattern cams they just come on hard.....many versions of the 280 cam out there they all ran great in 327s and 350s and could be daily driven. The SSI version on a 109 was a good happy medium(probably an Elgin PAW sold it as a regrind
Not sure how to post a sound video , if I can figure it out I will. Maybe I can email one to somebody to post.
Interesting wrapping in toilet paper, I used to wrap my old cams in paper towels coated in oil.
40. Yes ago we didn't have the internet, and cosmolene paper. Probably the government and gun manufactures had it.. lol. I'm not. Sure if an old. L-82 camm is worth it. But it's in nice shape only. 14 k miles
Every cam brand & his brother sells em (GM x962) ... commonplace ... way back bought a 962 clone from Crane/Wolverine/Blue Racer
IIRC, seems recently there's some sort of swap program on CF where you offer something vette in return for someone else's offering. Someone else knows lots more 'bout it than me.
I just finished my first real test drive with this new cam. Up to about 2500 RPM it drives pretty much the same, but at that point things change, alot. I almost forgot what a cam will do. Now I just need to dial in the carb and timing a bit more.I'd love to post a sound video but I'm not sure how that works.but the sound of. This thing is flat awsome.I am very pleased.now, where's that box of jets?
