Hey everybody, hope you all are staying well. With whats going on with Covid 19. Im only working 3 days a week. I have been able to focus on my car. So its time to put the power steering pump and alternator back on. My question is Did my 68 corvette come with long or short water pump?? I have the original power steering bracket the one that bolts to the motor mount. The alternator wiring is right above the power steering pump. Both assemblies are on the drivers side. Im not sure what water pump to use? I purchased a nice chrome long pump before I knew what I was doing, Im hoping I can still use it?? Can you guys please help me? Thanks Buddy"
O.K. I learned this one the hard way many year's ago. A lot of people think, (incorrectly) that there are 2 chev small block water pump's. Nooooo. There are 3! Long , short , and Corvette! If you have an original engine and accessories. You MUST get the correct Corvette length pump. Slightly longer than a short pump, but shorter than a long pump. Failure to do so and your belts will run on angles and fly off. Go on Summit's site and put in your car details. It will bring up several pumps of the correct length of several different companies. Read all the reviews. Then make your decision.

Long pump does Not fit C3 ... it's too long
OP Buddy
First, in over fifty years, your pump may've been replaced, ... you should pull fan hub/clutch off and Verify the size of the Pilot hole where the pump's Pilot shaft fits into ... it'll be either 5/8" or 3/4". Then Verify if the Pump's Pilot shaft is same size. You DO want a match. In fifty years, things sometimes get mismatched.
I do think you'll be hard pressed to beat the value and quality of the Stewart pumps. Here's the above pump at Summit Racing.
If you're feeling a bit bolder, go for the same pump, but in aluminum. I've used the Stewart aluminum pumps on a couple of my SB Chevy engines and been very pleased. with the results.

Speaking of running on angles, my "new" to me '73 has a slight issue there. Bought it in November '19 and didn't notice this for 2-3 months. Car had Vintage Air added at some point, not sure if that's when something changed or not, but anyway here's a pic. If anyone has seen something similar/has a fix, I'm all ears. BTW I've already tried swapping a washer around on bracket that holds AIR pump but that didn't correct it.
I put a new Delco unit in my 80. I painted it Corporate Blue, and now it's a shiny reminder that the rest of the engine needs to be freshened up. Unfortunately, it is cast in China.
Even if you don't buy a Delco pump, their website is pretty good, and lets you search Corvettes (and lots of other cars) by year and engine. You can then use the Delco part number at RockAuto, and if they have it, you can get the GM part number there.
Not the best photo to be sure of all the belts. But looking at the Alternator belt. Looks like a short nose pump is on your engine.
many years ago. I took my 77 to a automotive repair shop. I guess I thought I was to busy to repair it myself. My original waterpump was leaking.
they installed a short 350 chev waterpump. The pump worked fine. But all my belts were running on angles.
That's when I looked into it and found out that Corvettes have a Corvette specific Waterpump.
Look it up on Summit or any large Auto parts distributor. Corvette's with an original engine and accessories need a Corvette specific pump. Slightly longer than a short pump. Shorter than a long pump. This should get the Alternator belt lined up.
as for the rest of your belts. Hard to see and when they installed that aftermarket aircon compressor . Hard to say.

Curiously....why do you still have the smog pump installed? I can understand originality but you have a Sandersen style A/C compressor so that is out.
The A.I.R. was a trick created by GM to dilute exhaust by pumping fresh air into it. The same amount of absolute hydrocarbons is emitted......it is just diluted.
Years later they found that pumping air into the exhaust helped the Catalytic Converter function at a higher temperature.
If it was mine....I would remove it and put it away somewhere......they are about wothless in function and can actually impede performance by pumping volumes of air into an already challenged exhaust system.

get rich quick scheme. develop a dirt-colored clear to spray over new paint to make it match the rest of the engine...

Jebbysan,
I see what you mean about originality has left the building with the aftermarket AC. If I take it off, obviously I would need to cap off that vacuum line, but what about the two bigger, heater hose size lines that go to the exhaust manifolds?

Just remove everything. Cap the exhaust manifolds with inverted flare plugs. Nothing else should be connected to the engine....that I remember.

Ok cool, I think I can handle that. Both hoses run into a kind of bell shaped hootus which in turn screws into a small black manifold looking thing that then branches off into exhaust manifold (4 per side). You can see it right at the top of this picture. Thanks Jebby, now I can quit losing sleep over the slightly off fan belt!!!
This is the part number that I put on my 1968 in December 2002. Pulley rubbed a skosh on the pump body so I filed the pump body down (just a touch). Works great. Hi flow. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bra-1668
You need the short one. Don't bother trying to use that long one....it'll create more heartache than anything.
You can see it below. Lines up perfectly.
So Guys thanks for all the info. I have the stock mounting brackets for the power steering pump, the low mount that also bolts to the front of the engine block and to the motor mount, I also have the alternator mount that bolts to the face of the head and to the first bolt in the header. So i have a short water pump 2 grove crank pulley and I purchased long water pump 2 grove crank pulley. The alternator and power steering pump both bolt on on the drivers side. Going to install them this weekend hopefully the nice chrome water pump I bought works?? I hate learning lessons that waste money$$ Ill keep you guys informed. Thanks again for all your help!! Buddy"
Thanks, your set up looks like mine, same brackets. Alternator above the power steering pump. Im going to install them this weekend, hopefully I already have what I need?? Buddy"
