Before I removed the distributor I took a picture of it so I would install it the same way. I marked it with a marker so it would be lined up the same. Removed the distributor, messed with the timing bushing. Tried to install it as it came out. It wont go in the same way. One full tooth clock wise and it drops right in. I didn't change anything with the engine or distributor. . I've done this before with no problem. Could the oil pump have turmed a bit when I removed the distributor.
I am thinking I twisted the distributor when I pulled it out.

After at least two threads about this dist ...I now see it.
? Does your dist have some sort of electronic points eliminator conversion ?
It does have electronic ignition.... But that doesn't make any difference trying to get the distributor back in. I now have turned the engine over, so I am starting from scratch, installing the distributor. Is it possible for the gear on the bottom of the distributor to be 180* off and the engine still run?
Don't do anything but turn the "slot" where the distributor sits in the engine. Then try to reinsert the distributor. If you don't have a long screwdriver just use a *clean* hacksaw blade. It turns easily.

You're right ...of course that makes no difference in installing dist. You've been getting good advice on install.
But you've had tuning/stumbling/missing issues, right?
Perhaps there's a coil-voltage/impedance mismatch or an intermittent failure in the electronic portion? ... issues that wouldn't affect OE ignition.

you stated you didnt do anything to the distributor!
why would the gear be wrong now?
The dimple in the gear is supposed to be in the same direction as the rotor tip.
Well,,, come to find out the 68 327 is different than the standard 327..... the number 1 wire on the distributor and rotor, isn't pointing at the number 1 cylinder,,,, who knew. It's at the 1 oclock position,,, 12 being forward. Making my head explode.
Distributor is back in and timed, and I learned alot.
