Default Starter woes..

Hi folks,

Hope all are well, given the unique state the world seems to be in!

So.. little headache.. the other day, ignition got stuck on - so the starter kept trying to re engage in a partly running engine.

Since then, the starter begins to start the car - then grinds like a #insert expletive here#

I've now pulled the starter - which appears to bench test ok (the gear pops out and spins - am I missing something?)

Looking at the flywheel- you can see marks where the gears have been clashing..

Any ideas? Bearing in mind that this car was starting before- I'm guessing its not clearance?

Many thanks for thoughts?

What year is your car? Sounds like it could be a defective solenoid. It should disengage the starter gear after the motor starts running.

68... the starter was replaced not all that long ago, though .

YouTube vid of starter test.. the jerky motion is more from my shorting the connection than anything the starter was doing!

When you mentioned that the car was starting before, did all this start after the starter was replaced? Or it started after the ignition got stuck.

Check the Bendix gear on the starter and the ring gear on the engine. One or both may be bad as a result of an extended clash. Jerry

The car was starting after I replaced the starter.. that was last year.. it's not been used much, but was working fine. The starter being stuck on temporarily while engine running was an ignition wiring issue, not the starter itself.. but the starter grinding started immediately afterwards.

It does still start the car- if you have no mechanical sympathy.

The flywheel is showing Mark's- but doesn't appear to have broken any teeth or anything..
