I need to remove the wiper motor from my '72 so that I can clean up the firewall. The crank arm is stuck on the shaft after removing the nut. I've sprayed it with rust remover. I've tried putting wedges on two sides of the stud and tapping them to force the crank arm off. I'm not having any success. Does anyone have a simple trick to remove the crank arm so that I can remove the wiper motor from the car?
You can always leave the arm on, remove the linkage from the ball on the arm. IIRC you can pull it out enough to get at the two nuts that hold it on. Take a picture of it before you remove it and you should be able to get it back into the right position when done.
Also easy to remove the grill and you might be able to get a small gear-puller on to remove the crank arm, the ones that are used for removing wiper arms from the newer style cars are pretty small

Thanks for the suggestion, Mooser. I didn't know if I could "get it around the corner" if I tried to pull in through the hole with the arm still on. It's good to know that I can. I thought about a puller, but it's pretty close quarters in there to get any puller on the arm. I did remove the grill before I started the process. Here's a photo of mine. It's pretty well lubed up with PB Blaster. I thought I'd let it sit overnight and see if it has loosened up. Again, thanks.
There's also ones for battery terminals that are pretty small as well
But anyway IIRC it'll come out with the arm still on, you need to do one of those twist & tilt & turn and hold your tongue just the right way but it should
Anyway, let it soak
Mooser, my washer pump does not work so I ordered a new one. In looking at the wiper motor while working on the pump, I noticed a lot of dirt and grime around the wiper motor. So, I thought I'd clean it up and make it look better. I ASSUMED it would be a simple task to remove the motor assembly.
I've never seen a wiper arm puller like that. I'll look for one tomorrow at NAPA or another parts store. That looks like it would be perfect. Again, thanks for the suggestions.
Cool, and nothing is ever as simple as it seems...
Part way down here is some info on the washer pump, if you've ordered a new one might not be applicable
Mooser, after letting the linkage bathe in PB Blaster all night, I started to wedge a wooden shim behind the arm and it literally fell off. Love that PB Blaster. Thanks for all your suggestions and info. Washer pump arriving today, so now I have to go to work cleaning up the firewall! Safe cruising!!!
I have found that a little heat and some KROIL Penetrating oil will remove the most stuck fastener. KROIL gets into places where few penetrating oils can reach. Use a hair drier or Hot air gun to warm the parts up and then smother the parts with Kroil and it will come loose. I use this stuff on every stuck, frozen, galled or corroded fastener and it works for me. I buy it on Amazon or Eastwood and keep a bottle in every tool bag.
