Default Cabin wire harness repair

I am working on restoring the interior of my 69 coupe. I’ve removed the lower and upper dash panels to expose the wire harness which appears to be in pretty good shape.

There are a few wires that are bare that need to be reinsulated. The red heavier gauge wires pictured here. Should I just wrap with electrical tape?

I would use a butt splice with heat shrink. Unfogrtunately the further you look the more of these issues you will find. A sobering thought

The original wiring harness was wrapped in ' non adhesive' electrical tape from the start. It looks like someone unwrapped it to possibly splice in aftermarket items.

You can purchase the same type of tape online , or wrap it in the sticky tape, which has a tendency to slip and collect dirt from it being heated inside the cabin.

By the way , those are factory splices that were just wrapped in the entire harness as is.

yeah. Thought these were factory splices. It is a heavier gauge wire that assume is carrying a current to higher demand components.

Factory. It was/should be wrapped two half laps of vinyl tape. It "might" have had friction tape.
Non adhesive tape was the "looming."

Made some progress today. Went ahead and wrapped the exposed wires with shrink tube and electrical tape. I wrapped the wire harness to clean everything up. all of the wires have a home and are very pliable so I’m not concerned.

I do have one white wire that I need to identify. I believe it is the ground wire for one of the gauge cluster lamps? The lamp is pictured here. It is an orange wire that has been repaired. The lamp has a place for a second wire.

Looking at the AIM the mystery wire appears to be for the driver side courtesy lamp fixture. Orange wire and white wire.

I suspect that my 73 has had a terrible life. While the wiring was not butchered by our friend Bubba or his cousins, the plastic jackets are hard as steel. Even after I cut the wire, it’s nearly impossible to remove the jacket. I have resorted to using a box cutter knife and in some cases a file to remove the jacket. On locations where I don’t cut the main wire, I wrap the new copper wire around the old wire before applying solder, then I apply several coats of liquid tape on the splice. Sometimes I have to use fine sandpaper to remove the oxidation on the old wire to get the solder to stick. You can get the liquid tape at HD in different colors, but be careful and use a drop cloth as the stuff can run and mess up your carpet or a trim piece.
