Default Firewall Hole Plugs

I have an 80 C3 and going kinda nuts looking for a rubber plug for a hole in my firewall, the hole is 1 5/8 and its for the cruise control which i removed. I bought a grommet for a C1 that is listed as 1 5/8, but apparently that is the outer dimension of the plug itself. Whats hard is the generic plugs are for 1/16" steel hole, our fiberglass is 1/8, another riddle is some list the plug as the total diameter and some list as the diameter hole its designed to fit.

What did the factory do for non cruise cars? put a plug or just not drill the firewall? I wouldn't mind a grommet as I can use it to run wires or something, but as of now I have a 1 5/8 hole in my firewall with no simple way to plug it.

I checked McMaster Carr, Zip corvettes, Amazon, Ebay ... im outta gas on this. Any ideas ???

I found an assortment of plugs at a local auto parts store.

You should be able to find a rubber plug at a hardware or auto parts store. They usually have a good assortment.

I'm hoping your location properly translates to "Phoenix".
If so, have you heard of these guys? Local to me in Corona, and I've used many of their other stores in Orange County.
They may have something you can use.

if you're not in that city, look for an "industrial hardware" shop.

Good luck,
Tom

Two 3/8" 1-3/4" or 2" fender washers, Black RTV between them, 1-1/2" washer between those washers in the hole of the firewall to keep it centered and a bolt and nylock nut to hold them all together.

Not the prettiest but it works.

thanks for the lead, I’ll give them a shot ...

I thought of rigging something, but I’d like a factory looking grommet or plug. I bought some on eBay that may work, taking the slow boat from China ...

I am surprised 1-5/8 is so hard to find. Simple thing driving me bonkers ...

I just did this. I happened to find a Dorman expansion plug at the local auto parts store, part number 02603. I think I just about maxed that thing out but I did get it to hold.

It wouldn't take much to either fiberglass over the hole or make a plate out of aluminum or steel to cover the hole. Or possibly find a larger grommet and enlarge the hole to fit.

While it took a long while, my wife actually found a perfect plug ... perhaps someday I’ll fiberglass over it, but she ordered a 41mm plug from eBay, took about a month from Hong Kong to get here but it’s a nice tight fit, looks factory and EPDM rubber, so it should survive ...
