theres a couple of ways i could go around this but i want to see what everyone else did.im using a 87 700r4 from a trans am with electronic speedo so i have a plug at the tranny not a spot for the cable driven style.Ive been busy with my 4x4 truck and the motor blew in it last night so now i have time to get back on the vette and finish it up so what r you guys using.painless wiring makes one and others.
well what i was told was that they perform better with the vss hooked up on tpi applications. But i can get it programmed into the chip so it doesnt use it.The guy whos making my chip is almost impossible to get ahold of so when i finally get ahold of him ill ask about it getting programmed into it.Ill check out s&p also on the kit.
Re: vehicle speed sensor for 700r4 (patsnitrovette)
Actually you can take out the VSS from the tranny , remove the hold down tab and pull it out. You can then put in the cable drive from the 82 Corvette. The 84+ ones use a similar setup with the VSS. You'll however need to change the gear on the output shaft and the drive gear for the VSS to one for a cable. Then if you use a cable you can use the stock speedo & plug in a VSS in the back (the one with a blue or yellow box and a lead w/ optical sensor & led)
If you want to use an electronic speedo you could just hook it up to the electronic VSS unit already in there.
Re: vehicle speed sensor for 700r4 (patsnitrovette)
What you really need is a GM housing meant for cable speedo's....you could try junkyard raids....for complete assy's...or parts counter at chebby dealer....
at any rate, with a TPI system...you need ALSO another add on unit, aftermarket...to feed as I RECALL....4000ppm into the computer...depends on your setup I guess....I use a 1227730 computer....
several aftermarket companies sell them...I overpaid 7 years ago at tune of 80 bux....found out later 50 should have covered it....;-(((
at any rate you find that cable is awful tight turn on a 700 enough without the extra pulse sender unit handing off it....about an extra 2" thickness off to the side in MY unit.....IF someone else makes a thinner mechanical with add on pulse generator...I don't know....good luck on that one....
BUT in all honesty, I found that a blessing in disguise....I hated that routing of the speedo cable, think it's stupid....so in one of my interior tear outs. for doing custom stuff....I drilled a hole in the floor pan to run the cable inside the car in a straight line....under the carpet/padding, up the outer corner of the firewall and a nice long fair curve into the speedo rear....
makes removal of the instr. panel SO much easier.....among other mods along those lines....
I hate to brag, but if anyone saw how much SIMPLER I have made MY car to work on over the years....applying ideas the original designers should have done...but budget $$$ and time constraints force things into production sometimes before it's time.....
gene thanks for the tip i still have to pull out my interior to finish welding the roll bar so i might route the speed o cable that way,i know what you mean about tight fit i was thinking the same thing if i had to use the add on pulse generator it would be god awefully tight in there.thanks again
