which timing cover does this? Link? Like I said, mine does not. It’s so close that a metal ruler won’t even fit in the space so the adjustable nut cover is out, but it’s enough to allow the cover to flex and cam to walk.

see the hole at Six o'clock ?
A bolt goes thru it to press against TC; bracing cover & preventing any flex.
Several wp companies continue to offer same.
Have a Team G piece on mine & it has the threaded TC brace hole.

Picture of the water pump sitting DIRECTLY SNUGGLY against stock timing cover with stewart Stage 2 aluminum water pump before rebuild and same cover after on new 355 L-82 sans water pump installation (same one in the picture). You can just see the dimple on the upper left of the timing case cover for the cam button if you zoom on the second picture of the engine. Not rocket science to install the cam button (its freaking so easy) since its sole purpose to allow very little forward movement if a weak timing chain is used or stretches....
And the timing case is going to flex how?
For those roller cams installed on non C3 water pump engines, reinforcement is necessary......where the pump is not directly against the timing case cover.

I don't see a name anywhere and the work order does not specify either. Hosed on this, too?
Google says it's a Melling. Corvette Central sells them for $24. Answered my own question about getting hosed.
Yes, it's a heavy duty double roller set; supposedly a step up from OE link-belt morse.
Melling set 3-163-S about $21 at RA. Regardless what you paid, that's a good set and Nothing wrong with it.
Quite unlikely Timing set itself had any bearing on your valvetrain failure.
FWIW, Cloyes also has virtually same S288 heavy duty double row cam gear, part same number,
so yours may be a cloyes: not a gnat's azz diff between em.
recover whatever $ you can from builder & employ someone else to fix this; perhaps yourself.
