You couldn't pay me to put that STP crap in my neighbors lawn mower. Valvoline racing either regular or synthetic. Amzoil Lucas are all good. I use 15 50 red line synthetic I've used it for years in cars and harleys. The cam and lifters I just took out were perfect. And I went back with another flat tappet cam and have confidence it will live a long life.
In the earlier days, it was a friction modifier. Today, if you have a car with a flat tappet cam, it boosts the level of ZDDP in the oil, helping to preserve your camshaft.
If you are thinking that dumping a can of that stuff in your oil will provide you with enough protection for your cam I can guarantee you it wont. If you think it will call any cam grinder and they will tell you.
if you think you have to run additives in your oil, maybe you should get a better oil. There is more than just zinc involved in this even if it has 1200 ppm of zinc it dilutes into the other oil. Which means you would need to run straight STP to have the correct level.
Diesel Oil was a high quality economical alternative that still had the additives after the EPA ruined the gasoline engine oil specs.
GM would never have needed to recommend diesel rated oil because they stopped making the flat tappet engines decades ago.
Diesel rated oil was more robust (expensive) than conventional gasoline rated engine oil at the time when they were producing flat tappet engines. There is a reason it was never recommended by GM - Cost.
