It's header replacement time! I'm going with the Hedman Hedders with the air tubes and the coating. I'm getting them from Jet-Hot and it's a $499 whack... They make some pretty good claims about their coating compared to others, but then again, so would I if I were Jet-Hot.
I saw where BSeery got the same headers, so if you're reading this, jump in here... Questions I have (for an '81 with factory shorty headers) are:
1) What to do for the A/C bracket. Presently there's a welded sleeve on the first bolt hole of the shorties. Is it best just to make up a sleeve or get one of the A/C brackets they sell?
2) Does the starter need to come off? The dipstick tube? I think the plugs need to come out.
3) Is there a clearance issue with the power steering cylinder?
4) I have have a 700R4, and I think it's a bit wider than the TH350. Any clearance problems here?
5) Would you recommend an 02 bung on the reducer or should I see if they'll install one on the collector before they coat it?
Uh.. and anything else that will make life easier. Tnx! :D
Tonight I removed the driver's side header. Not too bad a job and did it from the top (figures, since the car is still up on jackstands so I'm having to use a stool), but the manifold had to come out from below. I'm still fighting with the passenger side. All bolts are out except the A/C bracket bolt. It's some sort of double bolt configuration and I'm trying not to have to remove the compressor. It's all loosened up with the other compressor bracket bolts out, but it's not moving around very easily 'cause of the hoses. Guess I'll just keep fighting it until, uh, I break something.... :smash: Anyt tips?
Yes, we do have Pre-coated Hedman headers available for your application. As you would expect they are coated inside & out with our Sterling finish, and carry a lifetime warranty. Price is $499 for the set, and that includes bolts, gaskets and shipping within the 48 states via FedEx ground.
This is NOT what you would buy from Summit, Jegs, etc. Hedman & Flowtech don’t coat the insides of the pipes. Hooker’s internal coating is merely a line of sight spray down the first few inches of the primary tubes. Which is why their warranty is only a year.
Our coating is expected to lower under-hood temperatures by 40 degrees, keeps the pipes 25% cooler and get you 1-3% extra horsepower. Of course, it's highly rust resistant as well - 140x better than paint. Because of that we expect it to increase part life be 10x or more.
If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me line.

Re: Header Questions (Chris81)
I just got a set of Hedmans off Ebay. 68301's that were coated ... They look GREAT! My only prob is that the engine's not done yet so I'm still waiting to put it all together. :smash:

Re: Header Questions (Chris81)
I saw where BSeery ( Yo!! ) got the same headers, so if you're reading this, jump in here... Questions I have (for an '81 with factory shorty headers) are:
1) What to do for the A/C bracket. Presently there's a welded sleeve on the first bolt hole of the shorties. Is it best just to make up a sleeve or get one of the A/C brackets they sell? I am just going to get / make a small sleave and go with that.
2) Does the starter need to come off? The dipstick tube? I think the plugs need to come out. Plugs have to come out for sure, dipstick being removed will help. You 'shouldn't' have to remove the starter, but un-hook the battery for sure !! You don't want to be shorting it out while your down there playing with the pipes
3) Is there a clearance issue with the power steering cylinder? Hedman says no with their's. All my pipes come straight down the middle and then 90 degree turn back, just like the stock exhaust route.
4) I have have a 700R4, and I think it's a bit wider than the TH350. Any clearance problems here? Shouldn't be, but I don't know for sure. The headers point straight back, they don't curve in toward the center of the car.
5) Would you recommend an 02 bung on the reducer or should I see if they'll install one on the collector before they coat it? see if they will put one in the collector, but then you gotta worry about clearance with the floor, ground, tranny, and other items. I am going to figure mine out once it is in the car.
Uh.. and anything else that will make life easier. Tnx! Do you like beer? Start before you install, and stop the install if it gets blurry :D
I bought mine from Summit then sent them to Jet Hot and had tehm coated. This was done before Jet Hot was selling headers already coated. Or I did not know about doing it this way. It probably cost me more but mine are coated inside and out. They cool down very fast.
Thanks for the info! Jet-Hot replied about the 02 fitting and they'll do it before coating for $20. Just need to let them know where I want it attached. Of course, I have no idea without fitting them. Do you know about where the collector starts (some point on the chassis or engine)? Tnx...
I'm not sure about the O2 bung, and they may not be totally 100% Jet-Hot coated internally, but you certainly can't beat the Dynomax headers for the price.
Got the old ones off without needing any beer. Found one extra a/c bracket bolt... no wonder I was having trouble! Removed all the plugs and also had to remove the dipstick tube. It was threaded between the pipes and the air tubes, so no options there. Pulled the heat shield off the block, 'cause that'll be in the way as well. Just waiting for the new headers now, but it'll give me time to clean things up with all that extra room... :yesnod: I'm no header expert, but I gotta tell ya, the '81 shorty design looks really bad. The two center tubes are flattened to about 1/2 their diameter to make the sharp downturn, and the 2" collector is cramped with the 4 pipes jammed in there. The new headers are bound to make a difference! Can't wait! You guys tape them up before installing them to prevent scratches?

They claim a lifetime warranty, against even rust, with their coated headers. At about $220, I might go this way.
