Default Frame Off Resto

I see a lotta nice VETTES! :yesnod: what, between visiting these forums and attending my local club meetings and such. Lots of them have been built from the ground up. It makes me wonder:

What is the fascination???? :mad Don't get me WRONG because I have a lotta respect for someone with that dedication and the talent to put it all together. A LOT of respect. And the cars are great!

I'm a driver. I love building engines and I love driving the HECK out of 'em. ;) After I've driven it hard for a few years I change cars and build another motor....or whatever. But I guess my point is that I'd rather be driving it than be underneath it!

So I dunno where I was actually going with this conversation ... maybe to ask if you guys have another Vette that you drive while doing the resto on the "main" one?

Or am I just nutzzz :hat

I have had my '68 BB, roadster off the road for about six years now. I am hoping I will be ready for a body drop by the first of the year. And yes more than anything I miss driving it, there is nothing more exuberant cruising around on a beautiful day and taking in all the input from the spectators. However what I fail to remember sometimes is the noises I would here in the powertrain, etc all these things would put a not so comfortable feeling in me so I decided to 100% completely redo it. Then I will have total confidence in it to go anywhere.

In my case I had the 77 on the road and was able to drive it anytime. Came across a 76 "Dirt Cheap" because it needed a new frame as the orginal one was rotted out so bad. Not wanting to let a measley old frame change from preventing me from having a second vette I scooped it up. It's nice to be able to mod this out by way of the new upgrades available. Starting with a bare frame is the only way!

I bought a new ZZ1 from GM years ago and it did not come with a fuel pump rod. In fact the fuel pump location had a block off plate. I bought a new fuel pump rod and installed it to use a mechanical fuel pump. Not knowing what you have, take what is in the ZZ1 to the parts counter and compare it with a standard fuel pump rod for the 350 engine. By the way the ZZ1 has some differences from later ZZ engines. My user name is incorrect, my typo error, it should be ZZ1 not ZZ3. Anyway the ZZ1 has a high riser type intake similiar to what came on the LT-1 engine of 1970. I bought my engine in 1991 and its still running great.

For me Paul, it comes down to having a safe, solid, vintage vette
for very few $$. I do all of the work myself, so tools and parts
are the only outlay. I'm into her for about $5-6k so far.

I guess the big difference is that I want her to last a long time.
Also, I take pride in the job that I am doing. Someone with lesser
ambitions may have simply thrown my 75 away. Not me ....
I never throw cars away (or sell them). Time for a bigger driveway.

BTW - no extra vette to drive, but I've met some folks in the forum that
let me drive theirs from time to time - just to keep the fever going.

:seeya

I´m guilty - you know it´s that special illness......
Everything has to be perfect...
My Dream Corvette is a vette that has perfect quality, perfect finish, perfect everything. From the brake calipers up to the windshieldframe.
If there would be a rust spot somewhere I couldn´t sleep well :blueangel:
The C3 is such a nice car. It deserves to be perfect.
Many cars here at the forum have reached a point of perfection that was never achieved by GM.
My goal is to build the best of all - we´ll see how close I can get....
Here in Europe I don´t have that much competition

I look at it this way... Why would anyone spend the time and effort to make the car what you wanted it to be w/out really knowing what is underneath on the cars frame. Mine was pastured for several years, and I want to make sure I investigate all areas for rust before working heavily on the rest. I think the best way to see the rust is w/ the body off. I am buying aftermarket suspension mods, but good suspension mods on a poor (rusty/weak) frame won't give me my monies worth... Just MHO

As for whether I have another vette... no, but I will need something to cover that area of dead grass when I bring the 75 into the garage to start the project... ;)

For me it is the pride factor, when some makes a comment on how nice your car is, you can think "Wow that is something that I did with my own two hands" :D
