I have an 80 automatic and someone gave me a rear diff out of an 80/81 4 speed car and i had it rebuilt. I was wondering if the side yokes needed to be replaced? or am i worrying for for nothing.
You will probably have to change either the side yokes on the rear end or the yokes on the trailing arm assemblies. They are different sized u-joints on the 80-81 automatics and manual transmission cars. The exception to this is the 82 year, they used the manual side yokes even though they were automatics only. The automatics use a 1330 u-joint on the half shafts and the manuals used a 1350 u-joint. Here is the u-joint measurements for each so you can see what is actually installed.
1330 SERIES UNIVERSAL JOINTS ( 1 1/6"cap X 3 5/8"span )
1350 SERIES UNIVERSAL JOINTS (1 3/16"cap X 3 5/8"span)

You need to have a look at what You have first. If the U-joints use 1/4" Bolts its the 1330 and if they are 5/16" then its the 1350's. Obviously the 1350's are more desirable.
Don't they also make adapter u-joints with both sizes?
I believe they do. If he ever planned to add a manual or more power, I would keep the manual diff yokes and change to the manual spindle yokes and the manual half shafts. That is what I did.
