Borgeson box with U-Joint connector, new tie rods, ball joints and idler arm, Correct positive caster for Borgeson and new PS pump. West Coast upper and lower Control arms with Viking coil overs. The car is tight and drives, responds super well. Feels like a sports car should. The problem is after driving on straight roads at highway speeds for a few miles, play develops in the steering. After a good curve or a turn of the wheel it goes away. Its just enough play to bother me. Could it be aeration of the PS fluid? I'm running parts store brand and I know they make high performance fluid that's supposed to eliminate bubbles. The car may have always done this and all the upgrades just shines a light on it. It's not a super big problem but it does bug me. Thanks for any help/advice.
It been aligned but I've gotten bad alignments before, so maybe. But the weird thing is how it takes a few miles of straight road for the excess play to happen. Could it be heat related? The Borgeson is a larger unit and is very close to the headers. I'm in the process of fabing a heat shield.
I'm running a Borgeson in a 70 model BB the header clearance is minimal, I do run a cooler in the return line to the pump..
Is the steering box centered correctly,
Bfit
Update: Heat shield around steering box dropped temps and steering seems better after a trial run. I'm installing a inline PS cooler this week (Thanks bfit for the idea) and hopefully that will help as well. I'll post back with results.
Update 2: Installed PS Cooler, flushed system and switched to a quality synthetic fluid. Its much better. Play seems to be gone. I can't say for sure till I take a longer trip in the heat of the day. I've got a trans cooler in front of the radiator so I installed the new PS cooler on the front cross member behind the radiator.
