So - this is what I've found. The purple wire was spliced to a red wire that had high temp insulation on it. The crimp just had electrical tape around it, no shrink tube. Would you recommend leaving it be, or cut that crimp out, crimping on a new purple wire and put shrink tube around the butt connector? The whole wire bundle will be encased in a high heat insulation sleeve from summit racing. That's what I was planning to do. But would anyone recommend leaving it be?

Same question with the red wire. As you see in the photo, right after the fusible link, the wire changes to the type with high temp insulation.

The yellow wire seems to have a yellowish high temp insulation on it (with red typical insulation under it) and I traced it pretty far back and don't see where this was spliced in. This wire has some nicks in it down by the terminal, so I think I will cut a foot or two out and put in some new yellow wire, which will also go inside the high temperature sleeve from summit.

Appreciate any thoughts and suggestions!

I did this. I saved what was there, but you need high temp sleeve or wire, the correct crimps , and a crimper NOT from Home Depot.
Distance from heat is good.

I just found this thread. Its been very helpful.
ive been noticing a "delayed" start after the engine gets hot. Im assuming its related to my 46 year old wiring harness.
I checked out the wires that are attached to the starter solenoid and they look pretty crusty - not burnt, just old and brittle.
I was thinking about tracing the harness back to the split with heater fan and splicing in new wire.
Thoughts about doing this? Would this cure my symptoms?
