So grateful to all the knowledge shared on this forum! Finally removed the metal backing plate, under the door skin, fabricated and installed a new one for the left sideview mirror. The replacement sideview would not pull down tight to the rubber gasket, seemed like the allan head bolt locking the mirror to the base plate was angled slightly in the wrong direction. Created a thicker rubber gasket, seems to be steady now. Swapped in a new exterior door handle. After getting the lock mechanism disconnected, was able to move it just enough, so that the wife with small hands was able to get that back nut threaded on! YAY! Almost locked the door, but pushed a lever with a long screwdriver, and got it open. Ziptied a rag over the Nadar pin after that! There is a plastic shield inside the door, under the exterior handle. Mine is split, and one anchor point broke off. What is the function of this piece? To direct water away from the lock mechanism? Did not see one in my parts catalog. Should I try to repair it, and reinstall it? As always thanks to all the great folks on this forum.

Post a pic, it is probably as you guessed, a rain diverter. They also had an anti lock popping shield in there as well but I don’t know if it’s metal or plastic
Interesting point. Which leads to another question. Security systems. Years ago some POS broke into my house, found the keys and stole my 69 Camaro SS. Never found. I know systems are much more advanced these days. Anyone have a suggestion?
While I know cars can be lifted and flatbedded I still consider an automatic and well concealed ignition kill the most important part of an alarm system. Particularly if you already have power door looks its a perfect time to add an RKE system that includes an alarm arming feature or an alarm system that includes an RKE feature. Either way you get both convenience to lock/unlock but automatic alarm arm/disarm as well. While it takes some creativity you can use the wiring of the "primitive" factory system as part of a new one.

I worked on a members 69 way back when. Best theft deterrent I ever saw.
He had someone wire the ignition feed thru the radio volume control. The radio was gutted, and you turned on the radio to start the car.
A professional who wants your C3 will get it, usually with a flatbed.
I'm sooo tired of hearing that one! By that defeatist logic there's no point in taking any precautions at all. Leave the car unlocked with the keys in it, if someone really wants it they'll get it anyway.
You're always better off taking precautions, it means fewer of the people wanting to steal your car will do so.
