Default Meet Bubba....

Working on my winter car - 1990 Wagoneer - when the transfer case gets stuck in 4WD - on the highway. Anyway, I get under the car and discover (1) The lever that changes from 2WD to 4WD won't go all the way in to 2WD lock because the levers are bent and (2) the ujoint holding the front driveshaft to the transfer case is down to 2 bolts from 4.

Anyway, I unhook the levers and bang the switch into 2WD with a hammer. I go for a test drive and as soon as I am about a mile from home BANG, the thing goes into 4WD and snaps the other 2 bolts. I make it home with some serious noise and decide that I have 2 options here:

(1) Replace the bolts on the driveshaft/transfer case ujoint and go to a tranny shop to have them fix the simple switch ....

or....

(2) Take the bolts out of the other driveshaft ujoint, remove the driveshaft and make it a 'Do-It-Yourself 2WD'

Which one did I choose? :jester  Ahhh, the wonderful world of winter cars.....

Me? I'd have the tranny shop fix it. 4WD is always nice to have with a freshly fallen 6 inch snow fall. :yesnod:

A couple winters ago I had spent $600 on my '89 sub to have a new spindle put on. You know those things only happen to me in the dead of winter when I can't get to them. :cry

I'd get it fixed so that 4wd is operational. I have an old 4wd (83 chevy k10 diesel) and it comes in handy sometimes (when u least expect to need it too).

Get it fixed, most of the time 4WD is useless, but when you need, you need it baaaaad!

Another "fix-it" vote. The one time it is needed you will kick yourself.

Oh, I'll get it fixed. But I needed the truck right then and there and I had to time to waste waiting for a tranny shop to get around to it. i will fix it myself this coming week.

Wouldn't you know it, it snowed this morning.

Try it yourself as fixing that tranny at a shop is far more than what the truck is worth. Maybe put some sand bags over the rear axle to keep it from sliding all over the place in 2wd.
That sucks though, sorry to hear it.

Greg, there is no problem whatsoever with driving it in 2WD. I drove 185 kms today in the snow and sleet and I was OK. The tranny is not toast, I just need to get the damn 4WD/2WD switch to stick to its position.

I wouldn't worry to much about 4WD... Unless your a poor driver... I've ALWAYS driven 2WD vehicles (car/truck/FWD/RWD) in north Ontario and now in NWT and it aint the vehicle that'll save your but, it's the but in the seat that'll save the vehicle...
