Oil gets dirty fast? Carb problem?
I change my oil and it gets dirty really fast, like after one drive. The engine has been rebuilt to new and I have a new performer edelbrock carb. I think the carb must need some adjusting? I think that too because it seems like I may have some fouled plugs as well, it doesn't quite sound like it should. Is it too rich or lean?

If it is indeed running too fat you'll see the black plugs. But as far as the oil getting dark right away, it makes me wonder about temp. Could the oil be getting too hot??? WHat temp does the motor run at.
Fuel dilution may come about if the fuel pump is putting fuel in the crankcase... but your oil would SMELL like gasoline, it would NOT be getting darker in color.
If the carb is indeed too rich or the choke sticking on too long, it may foul plugs but it won't turn you oil dark.

The temp is always right about the same, at the first notch, I can't remember what temp that is right off without looking. It never gets too hot.
But my oil shouldn't start looking dirty until after a few hundred miles, right?

On this, I'd have to agree. It would be interesting to get it analyzed to see if it indeed is dirty or if something is making it get discolored. Any other takers on this subject???

I am curious about this topic also. My 68 vette does ok - oil stays reasonably clean between changes, My 97 lexus (90k miles) remains very clean between changes, but my 92 volvo (90k miles) the oil gets black almost immediately. I am always tempted to do some cleaning, either trying ATF or some snakeoil engine cleaning treatment.... but then I think.... no! :nono:

How often do you drive your vehicle? Carb problem not likely. A lot of people will probably disagree with me when I say this but one should change their oil when it begins to darken or is darker. Oil cleans and cools as well as lubricates. I gaurentee your engine will last a lot longer. You aslo stated that you have a new engine. Has it been broken in? If not the dark color could possibly be assembly lube mixing in with the engine oil. This is normal.

327, alot of guys forget that plate under the intake manifold, it's there for an oil splash guard for the exhaust xover passage.....it gets full of dirt/sludge/crap really easy...and if NOT taken off the manifold and chisled out, it acts to add junk into new oils....pull the rivits out and then redo with bolts and red lock tite, and lockwashers.....
Frankly, I block off the exhaust xover passage with plaster of paris...sorta messy, but needs doing...keep the carb lots cooler, and aids in sludge buildup in that splash guard pan.....
I would convert to electric choke if not allready after that last change though..

I've owned a lot of cars and it varies from engine to engine. I think it's Rislone that makes a crankcase cleaner that you pour in and run stationary at fast idle for a short while to dislodge crud. I used it on a 351 Ford once and it did clean things up a bit.
