Hello folks.
In the ongoing 9 month long overhaul of the '76 coupe I bought last fall, I replaced the worn out distributor with a spanking new one from Summit. Had a few minor issues with the power and tach wires plugging into it, and thought I had it fixed. The engine, after timing it, ran fine, but when I went to set idle speed and mixture, the tach wasn't working. Hmmm.
I replaced the female spade terminal on the brown tach wire because the original was really loose, and though that should do it, and then the wire came off in my hands, with a broken end.
There is a brown wire coming from the firewall, through a double connector, to a sort of condenser on the intake. The. other half of the connector is empty. I have looked at wiring diagrams until my eyes started swivelling around in their sockets.
Can somebody help me with these brown wires? I've added a couple of photos.
Thanks in advance.
Ah-ha. Thank you, this forum has come through again.
I thought that little thing was like a condenser, with just a wire going in. But, now I see that's where the brown wire broke off.
I'm going to solder it back on tomorrow, and order a new one, (which takes at least a week to get here in France).
I'm hooking up pressure bleeder tomorrow to get the air out of the new flex hoses I installed, and it should be on the road Monday, after a helluva a lot of work.
I'm really looking forward to that first drive.
If you soldered it and it worked great... if not then we have the replacement filters. They are not a capacitor but they knock the square off the signal before they hit the tach board. But my tach board and even the original GM boards and read both square and wave so you should be fine... it soldering it worked.
Also.. and just a tidbit. my great grandfather was a veteran of the battle of the Marne... I have his medals to this day.
Here is a diagram from our tech page that shows it.
