Glued directly to the top of the tank...drivers side. Chuck
I have what seems to be a metal or fiberglass plate strapped to the top of the tank. I haven't dropped the tank but was underneath with a mirror looking around.
So I guess I ask again. On top of the plate or on top of the tank which will be underneath this plate?

Sorry if I'm being dense...
No problem...sometimes we have to keep asking until we can get things going in the right direction. As for your question...there should not be a plate over your tank...sounds like your tank has been replaced with a newer one...not sure how you can check to see if this is the case. But, if you can't see it with the mirror then it's not there...whether it's the original tank or not. Since I have sidepipes I was able to reach up on top of the tank and grab my build sheet with out any difficulty...I don't recall there being any plate up there at all.
On my -72 it was directly on top of the tank, on the passenger side. There was a short plastic cover that is between the tank and the straps at the rear of the tank but it doesn't go over to the top of the tank.
[Edit] This picture from the AIM shows the plastic shield
I'm also unaware of any plate covering the top of the tank. The only thing that resembles a plate in that area is the "ground plane" from the radio antenna, and that's only about 12 inches x 8 inches in size. Hope this helps. Chuck
