Im going to take out my engine from my vette and put in a new one. I was just wondering if crate engines were really safe to use because buying an engine off an assembly line sounds like theres a chance that you can get a POS engine.
Unless you want to go roller valve train, rebuilding your present engine is probably the best way...find a GOOD local machine shop to do the job....on the shortblock, and do your own cam and heads install...the easy work....
I allways go forged slugs, rods all checked out, balanced, the works...hi output pumps...etc....that way you know what you got, not some damn import from Mexico or whatever....
However if you want to go roller valvetrain....I think getting a late truck block say '88 up....4 bolt factory mains...all drilled/set up for factory more reliable roller cam...and you can have an engine all ready to go for about 2500 bux....much more power and IMO...better than the typical crate engine...
thing about doing your own thing, is you have complete flexibility to do what you want....cams, heads, rockers, intake, etc...you don't have to buy things twice....
