Trouble getting '73 driver side dash in all the way
Good Morning All,
I am having trouble getting the tach/speedo cluster in all of the way so that the screw holes line up with the center console. I got the car in pieces and this is the original speedo/tach dash piece, I have a new center console and new passenger dash pad, they all fit nicely. I did get a used dash pad at carlisle, but I think it is the same as the '73. I put in new kicker 4x6 speakers in the dash, but they are the same size roughly as the originals and I saw on this forum that others have made them work. Should the wire harness fit under the speaker or do I have to move it towards the rear of the car so the harness is beside the magnet on the speaker? That does not seem to be the main issue, it seems something is holding it up closer to the center console, can't figure out what it is. I did an LS3/TR6060 conversion on the car so I have a different gas pedal and some additional wiring but that all seems to be fine. I found a picture from the '73 AIM (below) on the forum and have been trying to follow it.
I have been trying to get the bottom roughly in place and then bring up the top to match the dash pad, is that the correct way to attack it?
Any help would be appreciated.
Scott
You can see that bottom corner has to kick up and back about 1.5".
I just did mine on my 70 it was a pain in the *** you are not that far off first check under the left side to see if something is hitting or loosen the three screws on top a little so it moves around then try pushing it in.when I did mine I made sure every thing was loose so you can move every thing around GOOD LUCK Bob
I suggest checking the routing of the speedo cable (tach too), but ensure the speedo cable is on the appropriate side of the braces behind there. Make note of the routing at the present time, and then disconnect and then see if you can get it fully set....if so, then you probably need to make an adjustment in that respect so it's on the proper side of the brace.
Another thing to check is that the wiring bundle is properly out of the way so you can push back...try tweaking on the bundle and see if it helps.
After a lot of trial and error I was able to get it in, I unhooked the odo/trip wire and re-adjusted the wiring harness a bit and found it best to start with the pad almost parallel to the ground and get the lower part up and in as far as I could, then jigger the top up and back into place. It was very satisfying when in the end it easily went right into place.
