I've read the sticky threads but just added to the confusion.
Picked up a 1971 with an LT-1 engine last week. No idea what type of oil or how long it has been in the engine. Planning on changing it this weekend.
I am in the mid Atlantic region so no weather extremes. This is a cruising car and will not put more than 3000 miles per year.
Thinking of using Mobil 1 15w-50 or Valvoline VR1 synthetic 10w-30 (black bottle).
For the oil filter, planing on using K&N HP2002.
Use what the owners manual tells you not some flunky who drives a Tesla! Oh that is right all you need is oil for the door hinges! Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter

I would also advise the VR-1 in the Grey Bottle. They say Synthetic does not cause leaks but it sure does find them. In a 39 year old car I would not advise Synthetics, but High Zinc such as in the Grey VR-1 definitely!
The majority opinion from this small sample seems to be to stay away from synthetics for an old motor and to use Valvoline VR1 10w-30 (gray bottle).
Thank you all for your feedback.
