I assume you are looking at one to buy? Well, turning the input shaft while shifting through the gears and listening is a good idea. Pull the drain plug and look for any metal particles...the drain plug should have a magnet on it to catch any iron filings. If you can do it remove the side plate so you can view the condition of the gear teeth. Other than that there really isn't too much you can do.

Check the 4 mounting bolt holes for cracks or repairs. Look at the counter shaft hole in the case to see if it look out of round, pull the cover and check the brass teeth on the syncros. They should look like nice, clean, pentagon shaped teeth. If they are rounded or brokened they'll give you a problem. See if you can tell how much play there is in the shifting forks and sliders for the gears, be sure to see what spline the input shaft is for your application.The inout shafts were marked with grooves cut into them except for the early Munices I believe. No groove=M22,1 groove=M21,
2 grooves=M20 wide ratio. Some of the early trannies didn't have drain plugs- my 69 didn't but I drilled and tapped a 1/8 npt for one.
