Is there a thread or instructions on how to change plug wires on a 72 350? My car has 57k original miles, and I'm not sure if the plug wires have ever been changed. But the issue I'm facing is all of the darn guides and/or guards (don't know what they're called) that the plug wires are routed through. I want to make an effort to keep all of the original guides, so I wanted to know if there are instructions on replacing the plug wires that tells me what to expect, and how to approach the problem.
I have the car on 4 jack stands with all wheels off; I can see my way to all the plugs from either the top or bottom of car.
Thanks

Pull the #1 plug wire from the distributor and remove the boot.
Tie a string to that end and pull it out from the spark plug end.
Select the correct length new wire, remove the boot, tie the string to it and pull it back up.
Do the same for #'s 3 2 & 4.
Thanks a ton. I had not idea the shielding was that extensive. Seeing your pic of the engine out of the car helps. I ended up changing my trans fluid, filter and gasket instead of finishing the plug wires today. I was able to complete #8 only today. Will give the plugs and wires a shot tomorrow with your "string theory".
Thanks again!

Great instruction indeed! This is a lousy job - no two ways about it. It can be so tempting to skip the shielding, but i believe the shielding not only replicates original set up but it protects the wires too.
FWIW, when I do this job, I raise the car slightly (I have the luxury of a 4 post lift) and use two people - one feeding the wire from the top and the other pulling the string from the bottom, or in Peterbuilt's instruction, pulling the string and wire from above.

i uninstall the shielding and put the crane on the motor. disconnect the motor mounts and lift the motor so I can get the wire between the motor and the mount easily. I dont like pulling the boots off, I've pulled the clips off too many times to mess with it. Which ever way works for you is obviously the best way for you. I also tuck in the last 2 wires into the shileding as well. this is how bubba did mine when I bought it....
The string process helped to show the route while under the car. After trying the string on #1 I was able to do 2, 3, 4 just guiding them by hand. Your pictures really helped as I went to them to show me where to feel for the proper hole to get started.
I would be able to do it pretty quickly next time - but I really don't want to do this job again.

How long will it take you to put another 57k miles on it?😀
