Default Steering Column Fun Time

Daily driven 1979 L48 w/ angled turn signal lever, tilt/tele wheel.

My turn signal lever just broke off in my hand. I will be taking the column apart to fix this, and I was wondering if I could kill 2 birds with one stone. The steering has a slight clunk when turning from dead center in either direction. The noise isnt jarring, or very noticeable. I can feel it in my hands and I can hear it with the windows up and no music playing. This will be the first time I’ve ever worked on this area of a vehicle.

I was wondering if I could get answers to two questions

1. How involved is removing the steering column.
2. If I cant find the clunk, where else do I look? Steering box?

Steering column removal is pretty simple. Make sure you don't let it hang, and make sure you loosen or remove the firewall bolts first, or you will damage your lower column bushing. That bushing may be your clunk, anyway. Post a picture of your rag joint. Getting the rag joint off cleanly may be the trickiest part. I "upgraded" to a U-Joint, so I wasn't too concerned about it, but the reproductions of this part seem to be inferior to the originals, so don't damage it.

In 79, there are a few connectors on top, and a long connector on the side. They should be easier to reach once the column is lowered a bit.

You don't need to take the column out but you might want to look under the hood at the flex coupling for the clunk
