Specifically referring to the pilot shaft from the face of the water pump mount for the pulley to the end of the pilot shaft. I ask because when I place all three pulleys on, there isn’t any shaft left for the fan clutch to Center on leaving me to rely on the studs to Center the fan.
is there a correct stock length or a change in length for AIR equipped cars? This is for a ‘69 small block
Oh, and also, I can grab the water pump shaft and it does move side to side/up and down maybe a few thousands. It’s brand new. Is it bad?
1. Bought a refurbished 1969 water pump.
2. The pilot shaft length forward of the pulley mounting surface is longer allowing for the fan clutch to be perfectly centered. This was a problem with the last pump and I was relying on the mounting bolts to center the fan clutch. I think this was contributing to the vibration problem I have been experiencing.
3. In addition, the alternator shaft had some play. Replaced.
Actual OEM pump first. Second is the replacement style from one of our vendors. Both have the same mount to top of pulley mount measurement.
? but are both pumps' fan mount surfaces equidistant from block ?
? make & model of pump w/ short pilot ? No idea...just some replacement style from Zip.
I do think shorter-lesser engagement could cause vibration.
^^^ Read this on another post which prompted the entire question and examination of the old pump. Can't get the car out or even started until the forest fire smoke clears...so we will see. But taking the fan and clutch off the old pump and running the car resulted in the vibes going away.

Thanks. It is getting better. AQI on Sunday was 491...down to 211 so that is good. But, I don't want to complain about smoke when so many have lost their homes. Feel horrible for those in this state, Oregon and California. Tragic.
