So I discovered that one of my spark plug wires touched the headers and it burnt the outside rubber jacket. The braided cover inside that appears to be undamaged. Do I need to replace this wire or can I wrap it with electric tape or something?
Underneath would have been the smart way of doing it. This was done by the shop that built the motor. I even bought the wire heat shields but one end has some sort of washer sewn in and I get the 90 degree boot to slide through It.
can I use the gasket maker from my photo or should I go get some of the jb weld.
That red JB will work just fine to patch the hole. Too bad they don't sell just one red plug-wire.
I have those boots or socks too, but in red. I believe they are Moroso. In my opinion they were too long. So I bought just one set of four and cut them in half to make eight. If you cut them in half, the sewn-in steel ring will come out. Its not needed.
I paid $90 for those premium MSD plug-wire set with 90* angled boots. I sure am not going to hide them under a header.
<<<<<< I like to display them like in my avatar. Just have to use good looms in proper places.

I just patched it with the rtv for now, didn’t feel like spending $100 on another set of plug wires.
I have another set of tall aluminum billet valve covers but I need to find looms that will work because they don’t have that lip on the edge where my current finned looms are mounted with the T bolts.
Duralast Gold Wireset D801187 is $28 at Autozone and they are pretty good wires with the stock HEI dizzy.
Routing the spark plug wires on these cars is no easy task and does not allow for much deviation from factory. Being my first Chevy (from Ford) I can't believe how easy it is to screw up. The heat shields next to the 2-3, 5-6 plugs is critical, and in my limited experience the fiberglass cloth insulators shown in Post 4 will only work for a few hundred miles.
I removed my heat shields since they were corroded and rattling and after burning my last set of wires have been waiting two weeks for replacements to arrive.
I quit buying expensive plug wires for my big block vette. I found that $18 Denso wires from rock auto perform just as well and they are cheap to replace when they burn on a header or break when checking/replacing plugs. Wires are disposable.
I used the factory routing, but i have removed the tin shrouds by the spark plugs. The wires have 90° instead of strait boots And have been there for 10 years.

The first time I did that the AC-Delco wires didn't last a week. The second time I used Duralast Gold with fiberglass cloth shields and they lasted two months. The 90's just get destroyed.
