Default I need help identifying a block.

I have the chance to buy a running engine for not alot of money. I was told that it is a 327, but I want to find out a little more about it. I can't see the casting number (It's still in another car), but the number in the VIN block is: T729D. Can anyone tell me anything about it???

TIA,

don't get all excited yet, i can't i.d. your block but maybe can point you in another direction. there is a site out there called "nastyz28.com" or something like that (you can do a search) and the guy has done alot of research on casting numbers. i think your going to have to get that number cast into the back of the block behind the left side head but if you can, this site can help you narrow it down. good luck.

T is for Tonawanda engine plant
729 is build date (July 29th)
D is the usage

You will need the casting number off of the back of the block on the drivers side where the trans / bellhousing bolts up for an indication year(s) used.

A single digit in the suffix code generally leads to very early production. If I remember correctly the "D" is for usage in early 60's Impala.

I don't have my book in front of me so I am not 100%.

According to this.....
http://www.yearone.com/updatedsingle.../engine_id.htm

"D" suffix was used for 1962, 63, & 64 Impala...283 CI.

OK...found my book....the "D" suffix was used for 58-64 Impala...283 CI.
Casting number from the back of the block, or date off of the side would narrow it down to the exact year.
