The driveshaft can be installed in either direction. That is a weight that you are referring to but it doesn't change the orientation.

If it is any consolation, I had the same issue with my 73 BB 4spd. I spent days measuring and comparing it to my 69 350 Auto. I didn't find any significant difference, but I was using a tape measure and it was difficult. I was in the midst of a frame off so I spent the effort to move the engine front 1/4". The other option I had was to shorten the drive line.

I did my seal and tailshaft bush , no puller so got in there with a small air saw, had’nt even cut halfway through and she popped right out with the vibration of the saw !👍
