Default Hood Release cable problem ('72)

For some reason my hood release cable (handle) does not return to the correct resting position after I pull it to open the hood. I must manually push the cable release handle back to it's normal position before closing the hood. And if I don't, then I have a bigger problems (and trust me I rarely forget to.) Everything appears to be installed correctly. Hood open and closes perfectly. I guess my real question is, what causes the hood release handle to return to it's resting position? I didn't think it was the hood lock/latch torsion spring as that does not seem to have enough torque to pull the handle back...but I'm a at loss. If any pics would help let me know.

Thanks as always for any suggestions.

My '79 does the same thing. As far as I know, the only thing that returns the handle is the springs in the latches. I diagnosed the problem as sticky cables. I actually bought the cables a few years back with the intention of changing them, but I got used to it and haven't decided its worth the trouble yet.

Check, clean, and lubricate the spring and spring pivot on the firewall where the release cable is attached.

Have the same problem, I believe its the cable, I put a new return spring in and it did nothing. Cable is new to, so maybe it needs to be lubed. Im guessing, it doesn't bother me enough because I'm already use to manually resetting it.

I do know that the new cable I installed is no where near as flexible as the old (original) cable that broke on mine. I had a hell-of-a-time trying to get it to run smoothly and return, forced grease through the sleeve, polished the cable, removed any little kinks, tried getting the sleeve as straight/smoothly curved as possible, works but not as good as it used to
