Default Body Seal

I'm trying to restore the driver's side door. There are references in the assembly manula to "body seals" near the door pillar. I notice Zip sells them, too. What the heck is this stuff?

Hey Bill,

It's not totally clear to me where you are talking about.
Can you post a link to the 'seals' you saw at ZIP ?

The bottom rear of the door opening has a small rubber seal with chrome trim
holding it in.

The front body (firewall) is sealed to the door pillar steel (birdcage) with two
types of adhesives. At least it is this way when I took the '70 apart. It is
sealed with what (I think) is a urethane adhesive and what looks like the butyl
caulking that is used around the windshield.

Here is a picture of the front pillar, after removing the firewall.
The yellowish stuff on the top surface is the urethane adhesive, while the
black butyl sealer is barely visible. I think some is there, covered by
rust - and some stuck to the fiberglass as it was removed.

ps - You don't want to go here.

Dave,
Thanks for the info. I don't notice any chrome piece on my car and there seems to be some sort of stuff shoved into some of the joints around the pillar at the top and bottom. It's all painted over and half falling out. It looks like welding slag if you have ever seen that. It sounds like I should stay away from this until the day comes from a frame off restore. Hey, is it as cold in NH as it is in RI today? Got down to 15 degrees this morning. My poor vette is sitting in the driveway on blocks with the rear suspension ripped out.

THe garage is filled with consturction materials (building our first home) so I need a place for it (SOON! ).

15 degrees ? HA - T shirt weather.
It was 4 degrees F when I let the dog out this morning. Havavavavava !!!

Sorry - the chrome trim/seal at the rear of the sill plate was for 74-77 only.
They call them "rain diverters". I'm not sure if they'll fit a 70, but I'll be
finding out in the next 6 months.

The stuff you see sounds like the urethane adhesive stuff. They were pretty
sloppy with it. Lots of mine was dripping down the inside (kick panel area)
of my birdcage. I estimate about half of it was 'where it should be'.

If you take a knife and slice into it, the stuff should be a beige/peach color.

Like I said before, you DON'T want to go here.

OOOHHH ! I know - now - what you mean by body seals - in the AIM.
They are foam seals that are wedged between the birdcage and frame rails.
These things suck !! My 75 soaked up moisture in these, and rotted a hole
right through the frame rail ! Here is a picture of the passenger side. The seal
was sitting just infront of the #2 mount - where the hole now resides:

Bill,
I started with the 75 - drove her for a few years and decided to go 'body off'.
'No go' restoring the 75. Then I bought the '70 chassis/rear clip. The 75 is
donating as much as possible toward the 70 (including the nose).

The 70 is on the left and the 75 on the right (in sig pic).
The pics I'm pulling are on my website.
I currently have my new domain routed there: http://www.NHvette.com
