Could be several things. First check would be oil level, weight of oil and oil pressure. If everything is good there, I would check out your exhaust manifolds for leakage, if everything is still good, open up the valve covers, be sure it all looks good then check valve lash.

sounds like a loose rocker arm pop your valve cover, ck for broken springs. Then reset your lash.
Did it suddenly happen or something you just noticed?
I’ll check under the valve covers tomorrow. My oil level is fine and I don’t immediately see any kind of leaks at the exhaust.
I noticed it last week but didn’t think anything of it until now. I don’t know if it just got louder or if I just finally got too concerned with it to let it go.
As far as getting new gaskets for the valve cover (if they need to be replaced) I have a 1971 400 small block. This engine would use the same as the original L48 right? Because the outside dimensions of the engines are the same?
