Default Electrical Question

Hey,

I'm new to Vettes and to this forum and I already got a question.

I just picked up my '78 and I've got 30 days (more like 25 now) until my out-of-state temp tags expire and I have to get it inspected. My problem is my hazard lights and horn don't work.

Hazards: I replaced the blinker (it's the one on the fuse box, right?), but they still don't work. I sometimes can hear the blinker clicking, but not always. When I try to use the hazards it often makes my brake lights stop working, of course a couple of times the brake lights have stopped working all by themselves. I replaced the fuse and checked for current on both sides and it was good. The bulbs are also good (if they use the same bulb as the turn signals, which all work). I'm assuming this is a grounding problem, but where should I start looking? I don't know if it's related or not, but my interior turn signal indicators sometimes work and sometimes don't.

Horn: My Haynes manual doesn't have a diagram for the horn circuit. What color are the horn wires entering/exiting the steering column? Where is the horn relay?

My long-term plan is to replace the entire wire harness, but short-term I got to pass inspection.

Thanks for all your help and BTW this is my first Vette, but I've got to say "It Rocks!!" :D

Shane

I could be wrong and hopfully more will post. Sounds like a problem in the wiring harness of your steering column. Hopefully not. Im looking forward to see what threads occur.

If I have to bypass the hazard light switch and horn button for the time being, that's ok.

Does anyone know where I can pick up a better wiring diagram than the one in the Haynes manual?

The light problem most definetly sounds like a ground problem. Reground the negative wire for lights.

Horn, could be anything, send me an instant message tonight, I'll check my manual.

The horns have a common problem where the plastic mechanism under the horn button fails. I think it was a $10 or $15 dollar kit at http://www.tld-corvette.com and I was "horny" again.
